Organization

Sketchbooks are sequential, beginning with Alpha and proceeding through the alphabet using the International Code of Signals.

The date provided for sketchbooks is the day when the digitization has been completed, indicating the latest possible date for sketches contained within. Most sketchbooks have one hundred leaves and two hundred pages.

Most sketchbooks adapt a practice of the first page serving as a frontispiece that illustrates the name of the sketchbook, its number and an illustration that is very loosely related to the title. The second page of the sketchbooks is always blank. Drawings on pages are often in sequence, but not always. Frequently, available space in earlier pages is back filled with later sketches or the sketches are reworked. The final page in a sketchbook will occasionally acknowledge the close of the book with a specialized illustration set.^[1]
